The only way a company will deliver on its promises is if its strategists can think like operators – and downplaying the link between a leader and a strategy, or failing to recognize it at all, is a dangerous oversight. This is the view of Cynthia Montgomery and, I believe, the most common view among executives. Interestingly enough, however, when asked what comes to mind when they hear the word strategy, issues such as plan, direction, and competitive advantage were mentioned. Only 2 had anything to do with people! Few builds a process where a well-conceived strategy flows without a ripple into execution – although this is a good bet on how to deliver the promise. So, what actions have you taken to build a process in your company that seamless encompasses strategy and execution and benefits from strategists who can think like operators?
